How to Get Your Business Recommended by ChatGPT and Other AI Tools
Short answer
No one can force ChatGPT to recommend a business, but you can make your business much easier for AI tools to find, understand and trust. Make sure AI crawlers can read your website, give each service a clear page that answers real questions, keep your business details identical everywhere, earn genuine reviews and mentions on trusted sites, and track a fixed set of buyer questions every month.
- AI tools build answers from web pages, business profiles, reviews and other public sources.
- If AI crawlers are blocked, or your site is hard to read, you start at a disadvantage.
- Consistency and genuine third-party mentions matter as much as your own website.
- Measure with the same questions every month; answers vary run to run.
More business owners are asking us the same question: "When someone asks ChatGPT for a good [my service] in [my city], why does it name my competitor and not me?" This guide explains, in plain words, what AI tools look at and what you can do about it, without false promises.
How do AI tools decide which businesses to recommend?
AI assistants like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews, build their answers from information they can find and trust: websites, business profiles, reviews, directories, news and articles. When several trustworthy sources describe a business clearly and consistently for a topic and place, that business is more likely to be mentioned.
So the goal is not to trick the AI. It is to make sure that wherever it looks, it finds clear, consistent and credible information about you.
Step 1: Check where you stand today
Write down 10 questions a real customer would ask, such as "Best interior designer for 2BHK flats in Kandivali" or "Affordable SEO agency in Mumbai for a clinic". Ask each one in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google. Record who is mentioned, whether you appear, and which websites are cited. This is your baseline. Our local GEO audit guide has a ready-made prompt set.
Step 2: Make sure AI crawlers can read your site
Some websites block AI crawlers by accident, through a security setting or a robots.txt rule. OpenAI, for example, documents separate crawlers: OAI-SearchBot, which lets pages appear in ChatGPT search answers, and GPTBot, which collects content for model training. Each can be allowed or blocked separately in robots.txt. Check your robots.txt file and any firewall or "bot protection" settings, and make sure important pages load as real text (not only images or heavy scripts).
Step 3: Give every service its own clear page
A single "Services" page with one line per service gives AI tools very little to work with. Create one page per main service that says who it is for, what is included, how the process works, typical questions and how to contact you. Start the page with a two- or three-sentence answer that could be quoted on its own.
Step 4: Answer the questions buyers really ask
Collect questions from WhatsApp chats, calls and emails. Answer them on your service pages and in a few in-depth articles, with question-style headings and a direct answer under each. This is answer engine optimization in practice.
Step 5: Keep your business details identical everywhere
Your business name, phone number, address or service area, website, hours and categories should match on your website, Google Business Profile, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook and directories. Mismatches make it harder for any system to be sure it has the right business.
Step 6: Add structured data that matches the page
Structured data (schema) is code that labels facts on your page: your organisation, services, founder, FAQs and articles. It must describe what visitors can actually see; never add reviews, ratings or awards in schema that are not real and visible.
Step 7: Earn genuine reviews and third-party mentions
AI answers often cite directories, review platforms, industry lists and local news. Ask happy clients for honest Google reviews, get listed on reputable directories in your industry, and contribute expert answers or articles where your customers already read. Never buy reviews or fake listings; they break platform rules and can damage trust permanently.
Step 8: Track the same questions every month
AI answers vary from run to run and change over time. Re-run your fixed question set monthly and look at the trend: how often you are mentioned, how accurately, and which sources are cited. Pair it with Google Search Console data for the website side.
What to avoid
- Anyone guaranteeing that ChatGPT will recommend you
- Fake reviews, paid "top 10" lists that are really adverts, or copied content
- Stuffing city names into every sentence
- Different business details on different platforms

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?
Not in normal answers. Anyone promising guaranteed AI recommendations is overpromising. What works is making your business easy to understand and trust across the web.
Does ChatGPT use Google results?
AI tools use different sources and search partners, and this changes over time. The safest approach is to be strong everywhere: on Google, Bing, your Google Business Profile, directories and trusted industry sites.
How long does it take?
Website fixes can be picked up within weeks, but AI answers change gradually as more sources describe you consistently. Track trends over 2 to 4 months rather than day to day.
